The Patu belongs to the Meremere or short combat weapons group. Patu means "to pierce or chop" and it was used with great skill and dexterity during battle. This Patu is 12-1/2" long x about 3-1/2" wide, with carved koru swirl designs and a paua shell inlaid circle. Same design on both sides.
These authentic Maori Meres (ceremonial clubs) are beautifully hand carved in New Zealand from richly grained native hardwoods, then smoothed and polished. Each has exquisitely carved traditional details and paua shell inlays. Fantastic for performances of men's or women's Hakas or to display as treasured works of authentic indigenous Maori art. Amazingly excellent craftsmanship!
