This is a very lively kahiko number using a single uli uli (feathered gourd). The chant was written to commemorate the first time Crown Princess Lili'uokalani rode on a new railroad train pulled by a locomotive named "Lanakila". There are colorful descriptions of the sights and sensations of the train ride from Honolulu to Waialua, which at the time was a new innovation. It is suitable for males or females of all ages. The hula is most effective in a group performance, as the combined effect of the uli uli brings to mind the sound of a train in motion. Complete instruction is given for holding and playing the uli uli. (85 minutes)
