Tumata, one of the leaders of Tahiti's most creative and popular dance troupe Les Grand Ballets de Tahiti, teaches basic through advanced steps of Tahitian dance (Ori Tahiti), both Otea (a vivacious rapid style danced to Tahitian log drum rhythms) and Aparima (a story that is danced to a song with each hand gesture having a specific meaning). Each lesson begins with the basic step and hip movement and continues with arm gestures, variations, practice, and then a performance of the steps just learned to a song from one of Le Grands Ballets de Tahiti's Cds. The lessons include the steps tamau, ami, afata, te'i, fa'arapu, pa'ipa'i, ha'amenemene, varu, fa'atere, and hui. (64 minutes)
Bonus interview with Tumata features scenes of Tahiti, her classes and performances as she discusses Les Grands Ballets de Tahiti, costuming, and Tahitian dance.
