This docu-drama uses completely restored film that was shot between 1954 and 1975. The beautiful lush footage has been remixed and woven with narration (in French, English, or Italian) to create an idyllic vision of island life from a bygone era. An old man tells us the story of his youth, before Polynesia was taken over by tourists and industrializaion. He sees himself as a child and recalls his world as it once was. We witness his birth on board a sailing canoe and his childhood on the island of Makatea and the atolls of the Tuamotu spent in harmony with nature and the ocean. From his father and the elders he learns the legends and lore of his people and the ocean as they fish, call dolphins, dive for pearls, observe birds, and watch out for bad weather. He learns of sharks, lizards, whales, seals, and volcanoes. He hears the stories of Maui and the legends of the tiki gods, takes part in the boys' initiation rituals, and begins to see his world change with the advent of money and drinking. Gorgeous scenes of the ocean, island sights, underwater creatures, and local inhabitants. (82 minutes)
