Frederic Koehler Sutter - 12-1/2" x 9-1/2" - 127 pages - color photos - Hardcover - New book slightly shopworn
The poetic beauty of Samoa is expressed many times and in many ways in this anthropologial photo eassy on the people and culture of American Samoa. In the 198 full-color photographs reproduced here the author presents an intimate view of Samoan culture as it is found in the villages of Amreican Samoa from Tutuila and Aunu'u to Manu'a and Swains Island. Structured upon the activies of a dayand the milestones with which the people mark their lives, the photographs depict American Samoans at work and play, in their participation in ceremonies and celebrations, and in their relious life.
Accompanying the photographs are selected Samoan proverbs and sayings, and the authors notes. Their combined effect affords the reader an appreciation of American Samoa that mere words or pictures alone could not provide.
